Identified from a single preserved specimen taken in the early 17th century, and is thought to be extinct as a result. Thought to have come from North Island New Zealand, there are occasional reported sightings around Tolaga Bay, Gisborne, but no firm evidence. With an SVL of 370mm, this would have been the largest gecko in the world.
